Employee State Insurance (ESI)

Employee State Insurance (ESI) is a social security scheme implemented by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. The ESI scheme provides medical and financial benefits to employees who are registered under the scheme, as well as their dependents. It primarily covers employees in case of sickness, maternity, disability, and death due to employment-related injuries or accidents.

Benefits under the ESI Scheme:

  • Medical Benefits: Employees and their families are eligible for medical treatment in case of sickness, injury, and accidents. The treatment is provided at ESI dispensaries, hospitals, and clinics. It includes free consultation, medical treatment, hospitalization, and surgery.
  • Sickness Benefit: Employees are entitled to a cash benefit (sickness benefit) if they are unable to work due to illness, at 70% of their average daily wages. This benefit is available for up to 91 days in a year.
  • Maternity Benefit: Female employees are entitled to paid maternity leave and can receive 100% of their average daily wages during maternity leave, up to a maximum of 26 weeks.
  • Disability Benefit: In case of permanent or temporary disability due to an accident, employees are entitled to disability benefits, which may be in the form of a lump sum or a monthly pension, depending on the severity of the disability.
  • Dependants’ Benefit: In case of death due to employment-related injury or illness, the dependents (family members) of the deceased employee are entitled to pension benefits or a lump sum compensation under the dependents’ benefit.
  • Funeral Expenses: The ESI scheme provides a funeral benefit to the family in case of the employee’s death. The amount is typically up to ₹15,000.
  • Rehabilitation Allowance: In case of permanent disability, the employee may receive assistance for rehabilitation and retraining to regain employment.
